Free Kindergarten Approved Program at Honour Early Learning
Starting school is one of the biggest milestones in your child’s life—and kindergarten is the important first step. From 1 January 2024, the Queensland Government has made kindy free for all eligible children enrolled in a government-approved program
At Honour Early Learning, we proudly deliver the Free Kindergarten Approved Program across our centres, giving every child access to high-quality early education, taught by degree-qualified early childhood teachers.
What Is Kindergarten (Kindy) in Queensland?
Kindergarten, often called kindy, is a part-time educational program for children in the year before Prep (the first year of school in Queensland). Children attend for 15 hours per week, 40 weeks per year, guided by an approved curriculum and delivered by qualified teachers.
- Communication skills to express ideas, feelings, and needs
- Social skills such as cooperation, friendship, and teamwork
- Problem-solving and decision-making abilities
- Confidence and independence
- Early literacy and numeracy foundations
- Curiosity and a love of learning
- By attending kindy, children are better prepared for Prep and beyond
Who Can Attend Free Kindy?
All children in Queensland are eligible to attend an approved kindergarten program in the year before Prep. Your child can attend kindy if they are 4 years old by 30 June in the year they enrol. For example:
- Children born 1 July 2020 – 30 June 2021 can attend free kindy in 2025
- Children born 1 July 2021 – 30 June 2022 can attend free kindy in 2026
This eligibility ensures children enter Prep the following year with the right foundation.
What Children Learn in Honour’s Free Kindy Program
Parents often ask: What will my child actually do at kindy? At Honour Early Learning, each day is designed to combine fun with learning:
- Story time & Literacy: Early reading and phonics activities develop language skills.
- Numeracy Games: Counting, shapes, and patterns are introduced through play.
- Creative Arts: Music, painting, and drama build imagination and expression.
- Outdoor Play: Physical activity supports motor skills, teamwork, and wellbeing.
- Problem-Solving Projects: Children explore science, nature, and group challenges.
This holistic approach ensures children are prepared not only academically, but socially and emotionally too.
Why Families Choose Honour Early Learning’s Free Kindy Program
When it comes to choosing a kindergarten, families want more than just a ticked box—they want a place where their child feels safe, confident, and inspired to learn. Honour Early Learning offers exactly that.
Unlike sessional kindy (which runs only during school hours), Honour’s kindergarten program is embedded within our long day care. This means children receive the benefits of a free, government-approved program with the convenience of full-day care for working families.
Nurturing Learning Environments
From modern classrooms to outdoor play areas, Honour centres provide safe, engaging spaces where children can explore, create, and thrive.
Qualified Early Childhood Teachers
All Honour kindy programs are delivered by university-qualified teachers who understand how young children learn best.
School Readiness Curriculum
Our curriculum blends play-based learning with structured activities in literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving. Children develop independence, resilience, and confidence—critical traits for a smooth Prep transition.
Long Day Care vs Sessional Kindy – Which Is Right for You?
In Queensland, families can access free kindy through either:
- Sessional kindergarten: Shorter hours, similar to a school timetable.
- Kindergarten in long day care: Available at Honour Early Learning, where the approved program is delivered alongside full-day care.
For working parents, long day care often provides the flexibility needed to balance family schedules, while ensuring children still benefit from the approved government program.
